Did you know pine cones open and close depending on weather conditions to protect their seeds?! 🌧️☀️🌲

16th Oct 2025
As part of Maths Week, we discovered the difference between male and female pine cones and how they each play a role in pollination. Earlier in the week, we collected dry cones and left them indoors. On a rainy day, we gathered freshly fallen cones and compared the two, looking closely at their size, shape, texture, and how open or closed they were. This sparked lots of brilliant observations and questions!
Using different measurement tools, we then carried out an investigation to see how long it would take for the dry cones to close once submerged.Lots of fantastic predictions were made, but Mirren was spot on with her 1-hour estimate! ⏱️. The experiment led to rich mathematical thinking, including estimation, measurement, comparison, and data handling, helping us build key numeracy skills in a meaningful, real-world context. 🌿🧠
